Printed circuit design for production since 1989 — Kyiv, then Edinburgh.

The work

spans aerospace instrumentation, industrial automation, energy metering, power grid protection, medical diagnostics, and software-defined radio for electronic warfare and direction finding. Most of it was for series production rather than prototypes, and several of the product lines are still being manufactured.

Metering instruments built on these designs hold Ukrainian state metrological approval and are entered in the State Register of Measuring Instruments. The industrial automation products are manufactured to registered technical specifications (TU), certified for conformity with Ukrainian national standards (DSTU), and carry a declared intended use. For a British reader that is the BS/EN regime under different initials. The specifications and certificates are published by the clients themselves; the chronology below links to them.

Delivery dates are not quoted because a project is not started until the one before it is finished.

The practice carries a couple of corporate clients. Three is already a great many, and the number is a consequence of the working method rather than an ambition.

The next work is directed at industry and energy — the sectors most of the record below already sits in: industrial automation, energy metering and grid protection.

Work can begin from an idea rather than a finished specification. Concept through schematic capture and fab-ready Gerbers. The design work is done in Cadence OrCAD, on a perpetual licence held here; another package can be used where there is a reason for it, including the client's own. Parts procurement and assembly follow, from a single prototype through production quantities.

None of this was done alone. Every one of these products was built with circuit designers and programmers; a design that stays in production for twenty years is not one person's work. What follows is the chain in order, with nothing left out.

I read radio engineering at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute from 1983 to 1989, and started at a state aerospace instrument works in Kyiv the year I graduated — not in the design office but on the floor, with a trade title, at a plant that belonged to the Soviet space and missile industry. The hardware was expected to hold tolerance rather than merely to function, and I learned that with a meter in my hand before I ever drew a board. Three years later I moved into the printed circuit design department and started drawing them. Those were the conversion years: the plant was moving off the mechanical rotary-dial generation onto electronic telephone sets. Alongside it I took a small piece of freelance work on medical diagnostic equipment, made from a circuit somebody else had drawn. Coming up inside a complete change of technology base — and seeing it carried all the way to series production — turned out to be the thing I would keep doing.

Since then the pattern has repeated: a company's first instruments become the catalogue it sells twenty years later; a controller range passes three hundred thousand units and stays in the price list; a first-generation radio platform becomes a lineage whose successors are still in service.

I take one project at a time and do not quote delivery dates. Originating a product cannot be run in parallel.

After the Crover engagement I went into automotive electronics, taking four non-running cars back to road-worthy condition across all four powertrains — diesel, petrol, plug-in hybrid and full electric — to learn high-voltage architecture and CAN-bus behaviour by hand. This site is written and deployed by me, front to back.

1983 — 1989 Kyiv Polytechnic InstituteRadioengineering Faculty ↗ Ukraine's principal technical university, founded 1898 and now named for Igor Sikorsky. Trained as a radio engineer — which is where the software-defined radio work further down this list comes from, thirty years before anyone called it SDR. The diploma project was a switched-mode power supply.
From 1989 · bench, then drawing board Kyivprylad State instrument works in Kyiv, under the Ministry of General Machine Building — the deliberately dull name the Soviet Union gave its space and missile industry. The career began at the bench rather than the drawing board: on paper a fitter-adjuster of radio-electronic equipment, at the sixth and highest trade grade. Three years of that, with working visits to the launch sites at Plesetsk, Kapustin Yar and Baikonur, and multilayer boards for satellites being manufactured on the plant's own lines in front of me. Then a transfer into the printed circuit design department, and the first boards that were mine to draw: the plant's conversion products — relay protection and telephone hardware — in PCAD 4.5. The freelance work started there too.
Freelance · same years Medical diagnostics A small freelance job alongside the plant. I was given the circuit and made the device from it.
First instruments Promavtomatikarza-promav.com ↗ Worked on the company's first instruments. That line grew into the relay protection and grid automation catalogue they sell today — distribution networks from 0.4 to 150 kV, on IEC 61850. The 60,000th instrument shipped at the end of 2025; the line is still running.
Twenty years of production MikRAmicra.com.ua ↗ Industrial automation — PID controllers, programmable controllers, counters, dosing and weighing control, sensors. Roughly 300,000 units built across two decades of continuous production, and the catalogue is still selling. Products carry registered technical specifications, national standard conformity and declared intended use. Product documentation (UA) ↗
Energy metering · ongoing Izodromizodrom.com ↗ Automated energy accounting — gas, steam, thermal energy and water. Instruments entered in Ukraine's State Register of Measuring Instruments, with 600+ systems installed, including on gas transit infrastructure. The relationship is current. Specification & certification (PDF, UA) ↗
Lineage still in service Software-defined radio First-generation SDR platforms for electronic warfare and direction finding. Later generations of that lineage remain in state service. The client and the systems are not named.
Scotland · recent Crovercrover.tech ↗ Edinburgh agritech, based at the National Robotarium: a robot that moves through grain inside storage silos to monitor its condition. My part was the sensor — the one that carried the platform out of the laboratory and into working silos. Nearly two years on the engagement.
2022 — present A2E Tech Limited Edinburgh, Scotland. The current entity, carrying the same practice and several of the same customers.
Current · full stack Software and infrastructure This site is written and deployed in-house on Cloudflare Workers. A full back end — segmented machines on Oracle Cloud behind zero-trust tunnels, no inbound ports — was built, run, and then removed once it was clear it was not needed. For a connected product the whole chain is available from one place: the board, the firmware, and the service behind them.
Current direction Automotive & high-voltage Four non-running vehicles diagnosed and returned to run-and-drive — Volvo XC60, Jaguar XF X250, BMW 330e, MG4 — covering all four powertrains: diesel, petrol, plug-in hybrid and full electric. High-voltage battery systems, battery management and CAN-bus fault-finding on current production platforms. Self-directed rather than commissioned.

A2E Tech Limited

is the current legal entity, registered in Scotland in 2022. The practice behind it goes back to 1989, carried through a succession of earlier companies, in several cases with the same customers.
